News update! Kinda...

Thanks to [info]koreangurl08 and [info]purple_kaede for the information!

Jay Chou to star in SLAM DUNK with BoA and Yao Ming (posted June 30, 2006)

Based on various Internet sources and AP, Taiwan pop singer Jay Chou has in principle agreed to take the lead in "Slam Dunk."

Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou, will have the lead role, and his South Korean counterpart BoA, has also signed on.

The story is about an orphan (Chou) who grew up in a martial arts school. From there he learns to become a great basketball player.

And according to myJAYsian Fan Club (posted March 10, 2005)

Currently the scrip [script] of the Slam Dunk, is no longer the old version of Japanese comic Slam Dunk, it will be a collaboration of Kung Fu, sports, Hip-Hop kids training ‘Bull fight’ in the basketball court...

...

So what do you think? Do you like the idea of OUR SD having a "movie"? (which, personally, might not be the case since they said they are going to re-write the original SD manga.)

Honestly, I would have loved the idea, if not for the changing of the original plot. There's only one thing I would like to know further: will they be retaining SD's character names?

Uwah well the way they described it like Kung Fu, sports, Hip-Hop kids training ‘Bull fight’ in the basketball court... make it seem like all the typical sports movies that come out all the time. (God knows how many I saw in the theater previews today!)

They'd probably change the names, seeing as Sakuragi isn't an orphan.
The major disappointment for me still is that there's no mention of someone to be Rukawa....unless that's Yao! @___@

IF there's gonna be a Rukawa, I don't think it's Yao. I think he's just a cameo role.

...Oh please, don't let me eat my words!

I'd like it better if it's made into a jdorama D:

D: I will probably watch it. But I shall MOURN GREATLY for the loss of Rukawa and Sakuragi and the canon. Oh the canon.

The way it sounds, they should have just left out the "SD" part entirely and said it was a basketball-kungfu original screenplay.

YES! Why put it like it's from SD when they're so certain that they're gonna change the plot? =/

I guess they want to use its name and popularity to sell it? Possibly to get its legions of fans interested? Target audiences and all.

But still. Grr.

it doesn't sound anything like Slam Dunk the manga...

they are just using the same name, but I don't mind coz it might make others think of the manga (which is a very ,very good thing)

and a jdrama is a good idea, but it would be hard to cast the characters....
I can't think of enough Japanese actors that would be tall enough to make the show possible. any ideas???

oh no. please, someone stop them from doing that. it would be perfectly fine if they wouldn't change the storyline (i mean, come on. jay chou, boa... whoa.), but they're changing it. sd would kinda lose its essence... and that's just too much.

oh no.

sd would kinda lose its essence

EXACTLY.

Yes. And if it's going to lose its essence, what's the point in putting something like this out? Just using the title "Slam Dunk" is really not enough. The greatness of SD is the storyline and how wonderfully the characters fit in it. How the characters ARE, mainly.

There are lots of things that can be done related to SD. This movie is surely not one of them.

Goodness... what's all this animanga-into-live-action deal lately ;_; With all the adaptations that already came out but sucked totally, I'm really worried for the SD one... *sniff*

NOOOOOO!!! I don't like this idea. T.T;; Ok no offense, but they made in into Kung Fu? That's not very SD.

I just.. don't like this idea. ^^a

Yes! I think they put in the Kung Fu idea so it would make the movie more interesting, as what seems to be the trend nowadays.

But still, no. It's not SD. :(

Yao Ming's gonna be in it too? But he's........ugly unattractive.
I think they're using the name Slam Dunk to hype up the movie, cos Slam Dunk is very popular in South East Asia and East Asia. I have a feeling the names will be retained, but I think it'll be their Chinese names... I only know Rukawa's Chinese name is Liu Chen Feng. ^^;;

Yea. I'd much rather see Slam Dunk as a Japanese live-action than a Taiwanese movie.

I think you're right. SD's very popular and to put it like the movie's originated from the manga would certainly draw the people's (especially the fans) attention.

Even if the names are retained, I dunno but, I think it will just ruin everything more. Imagine IF Rukawa's suddenly this super cool guy who acts like a jerk jock who actually acknowledges his fans' presence!!

Ookay, so my mind's overeacting. But the possibilities... scary. O_O

Taiwan translates the anime Slam Dunk as 灌籃高手 and Hong Kong 男兒當入樽.

This movie's director interprets slam dunk the way Dr. T does. With help from people all around, our hero gains experience and precision that eventually make him a passionate and proficient basketball player. :D

jeez.
this is either going to be colossally awesome.
or it's going to suck balls.

but with boa in the movie, i'm already kind of frightened.

July 10 2006, 12:36:53 UTC 5 years ago

I'm not even sure if Boa's really included. I've searched a bit and some articles claimed that Vicky Zhao (sp?) will be the one to portray the lead female role. I don't know.

Guess we'll just have to wait for the final verdict.

Wow, from the description, it seems like the only thing that's Slam Dunk is the title. I think I'll skip this movie when it comes out.

Actually, we don't know anything REALLY official yet, except that Jay Chou will play the main character.

IF this movie comes out, I'll probably check it out but not with high expectations. ^_^;

Hey cyen! I missed you! :)

I'm deeply disturbed by the casting choice. Jay did nothing for me in the live action Initial D movie, and what reason do they have for choosing BoA other than her star power? And it looks like they're going to do the whole 'dubbing over in several different languages' thing again with this one seeing as how Jay's mandarin is poor and BoA doesn't even speak the language. The fact that they're pretty much going to butcher the original storyline (from what I've gathered so far) really puts me off as well.

There was a Taiwanese series a little while back called 'MVP qing ren' (translated as 'MVP valentine') which also was loosely associated with SLAM DUNK. They made a lot of references to Rukawa for the main character, and blatantly ripped off several plotlines from the manga (i.e. Mitsui's injury, team in danger because members grades weren't high enough). The drama itself was okay--slightly cheesy, low budget, and only three guys out of the entire cast actually knew how to play basketball (one was on the Chinese National Team, I believe, and another incidentally is my cousin's best friend who played with UCLA)...but I digress.

My point is, the fact that SLAM DUNK is so popular around the world lends its title to being abused so often for publicity purposes. I wouldn't care as much if they were making a movie that stayed true to its plot--a movie that at least tried to bring out the true essence of the story that we have all come to love. But when directors try to pass off their SD drama/movie/series/what-have-you as something that is obviously NOT the SD we know it to be, it's automatically a write-off in my book.

Of course, this is just my own humble opinion on the matter.
